Lit up like the Fourth...but it was the Fifth. We played with sparklers in the yard, writing with the falling light. Shay isn't so fond of the loud noise of fireworks if you couldn't tell by his body language in the Shay shot below. If you have a digital SLR and would like to achieve images like this, it is pretty simple. Set a tripod. Shoot on bulb---"B". Open the shutter by pressing the actuator and close the shutter by releasing it when you have finished writing your word. You can also do an internet search for "light painting". Have fun!

I don't know what you did with your extra hour today, but this lady went the extra mile and made a blog post after a nice shoot in Centennial Park this afternoon! YES! For those of you have been wondering why Amanda Arnold and It Flies By had dropped of the Blogger radar, I have two words that I hope can excuse my lack of attention to faithful readers and possibly even admirers??...FIRST TRIMESTER! That's right!!! The Arnold family will welcome a brand new baby in May. Thank you for your patience while I spent the last several months in the joys of continuous nausea and fatigue. I hope to play a little catch up to fill in the gaps of my online journal with weddings and portraits gone by as we spend the cold wintery months anxiously awaiting the arrival of New Baby!

Enough about me! The happy family above braved the biting cold breeze today for a family portrait. With a sweet front man in hunter orange and a thumb sucker with the eyes of Cindy Lou Who, my heart was warmed enough to have shot for hours! Thank for coming out!

Lisa is a very great firend of mine. She and her family have graced the pages of my blog since day one. If you have followed since then, you have seen her babies (little blonde girls)grow alongside my own, and similarly celebrate occasions both small as well as momentous with photos. In the coming weeks, Lisa will have her third child: her first son. Three babies in four years is a tough tough job, and there is no one out there who will think Lisa is crazy for the thought that this may be her last baby belly. So, we left work early today to make a lasting image for her to have forever...cause I bet she wont have stretch marks to remind her either (not that I am salty). So, here we go into the woods and down a hillside path, into a revine, over a fence, across the rocks, to where we settled by a fallen tree. I'm carrying about 10 lbs of photo equipment. She's carrying about 5 lbs of baby boy. Mud, muck, and muggy weren't captured by the camera, nor were the work shoes sitting on the rocky riverside. The pictures came out just as I had hoped. She is a goddess.

This was It Flies By's very first wedding. Nate and I shot it together on his birthday at Pittsburgh's National Aviary. I am thankful for a lot of things. I am thankful for Stephanie and Jasper's trust in my work and my professional eye. Nate and I had scouted out the area in the hours before the ceremony choosing the best places to take pictures. We overlooked some areas that may have seemed the most scenic like a delicate bridge over water, and favored a nook in an iron fance, and a walking bridge over railroad tracks. I am thankful for the chance to witness two wonderful people come together and share with me the moments they have chosen to share with their closest family and friends. I hope this is my first wedding of many more to come. And for Stephanie and Jasper the first day of many more to come. Thank you!

I took the photo above of Remy at Loudon Park National Cemetery on Frederick Rd. on Memorial Day. I like that Remy's downward cast profile mimicks that of the POW/MIA silhouette on the flag that is seen in the background over the wall. After a compliment on the photo from a photographer friend, I decided to enter it in Baltimore Brew's Memorial Day Photo Contest. They were soliciting for photos of "Baltimore kicking off summer". I have those: wading in kiddie pools, ice cream man, Shay watering adolescent sunflowers. But, I still decided that this is what I wanted to enter. I was surprised at first to see these young women dressed for prom. They looked like MOVIE STARS. Every thing was perfect. Makeup was professionally applied and the gowns were absolutely amazing. They all looked like young hollywood, and would have photographed nicely on any camera. My prom was 10 years ago... My sister and my mom bobby pinned my hair in the kitchen. My date's mom bedazzled the butterflies on my dress for added flair. And we borrowed my sister's Eclipse for a stylish ride. I am sure I will get a few commnets on this one...

Abby and Ben inspire me to keep going. They are my vision realized. The photos above are of Abby when she was about 7 mths old. She is a cherub--I love it! A year later, she sits on her tricycle with a skinned knee. Her milky skin, Gerber baby lips, and eyes rounded like her cheeks are a little older now. She is beautiful, and my living document of It Flies By. Her brother, Ben, adores photo time. He knows I come to hang out for a little bit, and he may kiss his sister a little more than normal, but for the most part--picture time is like any other--he catches moths, and goes to check the mail, picks a flower, and rides his scooter. I have built a relationship with them. They trust me and look forward to the whole process. And it keeps me doing what I do, shoot by shoot, making records of lives as they are.

There is no such thing as balance in my house. I have been up late nights updating my blog and working in the days and taking photos on the weekends. My sink was heaped with dishes this morning. As I took my rings off to get started on them, I noticed a couple things. The first thing I noticed is the Palmolive bottle needs to be updated. The bottle is an hourglass shape of a woman, and the label shows delicate hands with painted fingernails holding a shining glass. Advertising people of the world--I am more likely to buy dish liquid that show man hands doing the dirty work. My second thought, as I took my rings off, was to do a wedding-like close-up shot of the rings hanging on dirty dish related items.

Yes, the blog is mid-redesign. I only get little bits of time to work on it at night, so please be patient with the layout and the links.

April is Cesarean Awareness Month. So, I am doing my part to contribute...to make others aware. And usually, awareness is where I draw the line. Not into advocacy or activism, but I like to share my stories because they just might help someone else who is struggling with something to hear that someone else has felt as they do. This post is a little bit about art, but mostly about some of the most intimate moments of my life--the days my babies were born.

I got out of the Air Force in my first trimester of pregnancy after having served my 6 year term, and was hired on as a graphic designer with a defense contractor. The new health insurance policy considered my pregnancy to be a pre-existing condition and would not cover my care. But, I was still able to receive prenatal care and deliver at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD--and the care would be covered. So, that is the option I chose.

I knew that I wanted to have a natural, vaginal birth. I also knew that at the time, Bethesda's c-section rate was at 42%. I knew that I did not want that to be me. But, really, I knew nothing more. I imagined a helpful nurse or doctor at my side assisting me during labor and delivery. I wrote a birth plan stating my desires for no drugs or intervention.

On January 9, 2007 at 1pm, my water broke. Trickles. I called the doctor, who said to come in immediately. No contractions. Not one. By 7 that evening I was on pitocin to augment labor--now 6 hours into my 24 hour window to get this baby out. The hospital policy did not allow you to labor more than 24 hours after water breaking for fear of infection. And with the pitocin, came the internal fetal monitoring--the device they pushed into my unborn baby's head to monitor his heartbeats.

Now the contractions came strong and hard. The nurse told me I should take something to "take the edge off" so I still had energy when it was time to push. I did. The drug was called Nubain--and that is one of the last things I remember for a while besides vomiting. The drug caused me to hallucinate and vomit. I am unable to recall large periods of time through that night.

They cranked up the Pitocin.
Again.
And again.
And my body contracted long and hard. Through the night, I was alone. Lying there, on my back wishing I had someone to talk me through the waves of pain that were crawling down my spine and forward through my abdomen. Nate had fallen asleep. I called for him. He didn't hear me. I called for him again--unable to move from the bed. He awoke, and at 9cm--they administered an epidural.

For those women who desire and praise the epidural, I am happy for you. But for me, I just felt confused. Half my body hurt, and when it was time to push (at 6am), I had to watch a monitor to tell me when I was having a contraction, and I could not feel what I was doing or if I was even really pushing at all. But I tried... for 6 hours.

I pushed every minute or so for 1 hour. With the TV on and student doctors walking in and out and nurses saying PUSHPUSHPUSHPUSHPUSH in high pitched frantic voices. Then, SHIFT CHANGE. Nate and I looked at each other as the room cleared and our staff left. And we waited. What do we do? Are we supposed to keep pushing? On our own? With no one here? And we waited. We waited an hour before a nurse finally came back. Then, began to push again. I pushed for 5 hours this time--every minute or so, following the spikes on the monitor as best I could.

Then, just shy of my 24 hour mark, 6 doctors walked into my room. Stared at me. Some arms folded. Some, hands on hips. I asked if someone could help me to better position to push in? Or to check the baby's position? They knew nothing. Absolutely nothing. There was only one doctor on staff who had that sort of knowledge and experience. I waited for her. I pushed with her for 30 minutes or so. And she was warm and great and gave me a chance. But, my time was up, my energy was out, and they handed me a pen. I signed the paper, and within 5 minutes I was in the OR prepped for surgery. I sobbed on the table, my body still contracting. I pushed through them to take the pain away.

A blue curtain in front of me. An anesthesiologist at my head, and Nate at my side...my body is numb from my toes to my throat. I feel nothing but pressure in my abdomen and I vomit. Then, I hear a baby cry. He is mine. They wipe the vomit from my mouth. "Nate, can you see him? Is he there? Is he okay?" Nate tells me he is perfect. They show me the top of his head, marked from the monitoring device and overriding skull form where I tried to push him out, then took him away. Nate went with him and never left him. They taped up my belly and put big boots on my legs to prevent clotting.

45 minutes after delivery, I see my baby. He was washed, clothed, wrapped, and capped. Wait! I carried you for 10 months. I pushed for hours and hours. You are mine. I don't even know what you look like under there. I was the last to touch you.

He sees me.

But, our ability to bond has been affected. By stress, by drugs, by fatigue, by disappointment and failure....
That night, late in the night, after the drugs wore off and the visitors left. He cried. And cried. And so did I. Why couldn't I push him out? I got out of the bed, barely able to walk, and I rocked him...He finally fell asleep.

I did everything I could to get out of that hospital faster. I took a shower and put on clothes and pretended to be happy. And it worked. They let me out at day 2.
I took this photo when Remy was 7 days old. It was the first time He looked at me and I looked at him, and I felt a bond with him. I am thankful for having nursed him. I thin that helped.

When Remy was 11 months old, I became pregnant again. I wanted to try a vaginal delivery again (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean/VBAC). I went to Bradley birth classes, read a great book by Henci Goer called " A Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth", and chose a midwifery model of care. Eventually, I went on to choose a home birth, because deep down, I was still not over the awful experience I had in the hospital. There were things to figure out, like how to pay for the delivery (insurance did not cover). And I needed to build my confidence. But, I was pretty happy with our choice to deliver they baby at home.

Shaymus's birth story is a short one--which is a good thing.

September 3, 2008, Nate and I fell asleep on the couch together. It was so relaxing. I had some signs earlier in the day I might go soon, and I did. At 11pm, I had my first contraction. I woke Nate up. We were both well rested from our long nap. We put together the Amby Baby bed. I walked up and down the walk to our house, standing on my tip-toes when the pain came. Up and down. Up and down. Back and forth. Tip Toe. Tip Toe. Until I could hardly walk. Nate called the midwife. She was on her way. It was hot and humid outside--and in. I knelt in the corner with my face on the cool rubber birthball until the rubber smell got to me. The pain was getting intense. I knelt by the sofa and in a rush, my water broke. I was ready to push....RIGHT NOW. With that, Nate was fratically dialing the midwife. She asked him to get me in a lying position in bed. He did.

She walked in the door, unpacked her things and said--"Go ahead and push". I froze. I was terrified. "I am scared", I said. "You have nothing to be scared of. Breathe in. Keep your breath in and do what your body tells you to do." Ten minutes later, Shaymus was born.

I cried..alot. I cried for my scar and for my drive and for my strength to break the myth of "once a c-section always a c-section", I cried for the majority of women out there who just don't know or that they even need to know, I cried, and then I let it go...and bonded...immediately...with my naked, untouched baby.

All that in 5 hours total, with an Amby Baby assembly and a bowl of pistaccio ice cream in between.

Maryland Bridal Photography: Reuse the Dress

It is not in my nature to "trash" anything. My sister came down from New Jersey yesterday for a "Reuse the Dress" session. This is really great, because it gives a woman a chance to sport the most expensive piece in her wardrobe more than one time in her life. Doesn't that seem ridiculous when you think about it that way?! Pay the most, wear the least? You can also shoot in more informal settings; change up jewelry (all jewelry pictured above is by Stella and Dot and can be ordered using the link to the right on this page); or have a second chance to capture your wedding if the photographer you hired did less than an exceptional job. We were just looking for some fun unexpected places and a chance to reuse her amazing dress. My sister has always loved horses and where some girls may dream of their wedding day, I think she just dreamed of owning a horse...I was happy to be able to get her some stable time to blend with her wedding gown. Special thanks to Patapsco Horse Center for their willingness for us to shoot their and feature Harrington (the horse), to Baltimore graffiti artists, and mother nature for that AMAZING wind.

Now, along with Tyson and Tiffany...came mothers, sisters, brothers and cousins! It was a full hour! And of those, I shall introduce you to Landon. I loved him! He was tumbling down hills, jumping over cracks, running, running, and running some more--and I was with him every step, OR hunting him down with my telephoto lens! I love a good challenge. I have no expectation for babies and young children to sit and wait for me. I miss some shots, but keep it moving. If they get bored, tired, anxious--we move on and try desperately to make it fun for them so they look forward to the next time. His brother on the other hand...is ready to model I think!

Yesterday, Nate and I took the boys to the Cherry Blossom festival in DC; the day when March decided to hold up to its promise of going out like a lamb. Finding a safe place to shoot was a little difficult. But, somewhere between traffic and waters, we found a spot of grass. When a breeze came by, tiny white blossoms filled the air and swirled around us. It was gorgeous. Anh Dao is the Vietnamese word for cherry blossom, The Vietnamese language is interesting. My--means beautiful. "The beautiful country" is what they call America. I felt as though they surely have it right yesterday in the nations capital. Yea--my knees are grass stained... but aren't all good photographers'?

I met Kate and Chris at 10 this morning at their apartment in Fells Point to take their engagement photos. I wanted to begin the shoot with some sort of a "If These Walls Could Talk" vibe. So, I did. I photographed them lounging on the couch watching their cat OJ; it was a relaxed, warm start. We moved outside and walked a lap around the wharf. It's really an easy place to take photos. Bricks, steps, doors, water. I love it all. The last photo I took is of the soon to be Mr. and Mrs. in front of the restaurant they live over. I wanted to get a sunburst in it, but the sun was a little too high. While the quality is not perfect, I had to include it. The sign in the frame says: Begin One Way. And so, to Kate and Chris I offer that advice--Begin One Way, Together & Smiling.

I have excuses...lots of them. Holidays, computer is dying/dead, home projects, and a teensy bit of burn out. BUT, I am ready to get it moving again. I never thought I'd actually need inspiration. I am usually endless with ideas and creative passion. But you know what inspired me today? YOU! 21 FOLLOWERS?!?! And that is just other people on Blogger! THAT IS WONDERFUL! I am honored, and cant wait to bring you my best photos and writing to touch your lives and keep the love spreading! Get ready for a playing a little bit of catch up (Holiday photos, birthdays and more!)and look forward to Senior Portrait April. THANK YOU ALL so much for following my blog, believing in what I do, and forgiving me for my much needed break from the grind. Holding down home, family, travels, work, customers, is no easy task--but I love challenge and I will keep it coming! Here is a photo from last spring, and I think it is what we need today in Baltimore where the weather is ANYTHING but hot. There are so many reasons my family needed a photo session. So, in November, we packed up a suitcase filled with color palette options--we did red, brown, cream, and turquoise-- and took a day in New Jersey. My mom turned 50 this year, and has had a rough couple of years--but this year it will turn around, and I wanted a way to show her that her life is as full, vibrant and beautiful as she is. We did our shoot by the marsh in South Jersey. It was a beautiful scene, but by the time we got everyone dressed and there, it was 1pm and the light was as harsh as the shadows. It was a TOUGH job, but with a family this beautiful, we can overcome light I guess! Now, my sister has Christmas photos for her family, a reminder for herself that she could be America's next Top Model, my mom has 50th birthday photos, and all of her kids in one place at one time... if only for one day.

I personally have no Christmas photos of the family, or even plans to take one, but mini shoots were a success and while everyone naps today, I am in editing mode. I arrived a little early for a shoot I had in Ellicott City a few weeks back. I took a little walk and got a couple images. Guy getting a tattoo. Musketeer bubble blower. And a railroad in charcoal.

I am trying really hard not to make this about me--but looking back makes me see how far I have come with my photographs and my style. The Spirit of It Flies By

It Flies By is not just a business for me--in fact it is probably 99% passion and the business part just happened upon me..in this way.

My son. My first son changed ever so slightly every single day and while I was so happy to see him grow and change, with every milestone I held these tiny inner vigils to say goodbye to the smaller, less advanced version of him that I held months, days, sometimes just moments before. And I couldn't let these moments fly by without being honored in some way. And so I thought. It Flies By. It does. And I bought a web domain to document his life called itfliesby.com. And it was mine. It was unused, but I owned real estate on the web and that was step one.

Then, my love for photography started to grow. I felt that the photos I was taking were a lasting gift that I could pass to my children, my family, and anyone who could appreciate the world as I saw it. I also felt that photography as a passion awakened a tie to my grandmother who was very influential in my life and was the person who documented my own life through photos.

I am a believer in delayed gratification, hard work and reward. I told Nate that I would like a new camera (DSLR) when I had nursed Remy for one year. When he was just 10mths, Nate surprised me with a used Canon Rebel he had purchased for me. And with step three in place, I was ready to begin my life document of my son and my family--It Flies By.

But what happened was that I wanted to be able to provide others with the same feeling--as though they had properly captured what it was about their own children today that made them--them. I wanted to share what I had--my eye, my art, my ability to tell a story in one frame--I wanted to not only tell my story and the story of my family, but I wanted to tell a new story of the world and people as they are and how I'd like them to be in the world of photography.

Maryland Photographer: The Fall Rush

Fall is a very busy portrait season. I am a teensy bit behind on uploading and packaging, but as you can see, it's almost 2 am, and I hope to wrap up lingering work tonight/this morning to have a clean slate for Sunday's shoots. The boys have a birthday party in the morning--so maybe we'll hit up Starbucks first! I love busy though. I love the calls that rush in just like crisp fall air, each gust bringing us closer to the bare trees of winter as leaves twist, wind, and fall to mingle with one another in crunchy goodness under booted feet. Everyone wants the color of fall and the planners are thinking holiday photos, gifts, and cards. Get in! It's not too late--we'll find a time, and at the very least--kids playing in fallen leaves is always cute too! And if you haven't taken time to lie under a tree like I did to get the photo above, you are missing out!

In the first pair of photos, Remy is giving his Auntie the "I love you" sign for saving him from Mr Potato Head, outfitting him in Thomas, and giving him spooky caboose train loot! Maryland Photographer: Handmade Halloween

I love Halloween. I am not the creepy, dark, Halloween type. What I love exactly are kids in costumes and pumpkin carving. I took my little brother trick or treating when he was tiny and now I look forward to outfitting my own kids in cute costumes--pretty much all year round. So far, they have racked up costumes of: Mexican Jumping Bean, Will Farrel Elf, Dragon and Store bought Monkey. Though I probably thought of at least 20 more things I'd love to see them be. This year, Shaymus is really into Grover. When I searched for Grover costumes there was only an ADULT version??? Wierd. The photo is hilarious! There was also an old school one on Ebay--but it was the plastic tunic and plastic mask kind that I don't think he'd be willing to wear at this young age. At this point in the story is where I decide to take on sewing the costume myself. I have no sewing machine, no pattern or idea how to use them, and clearly I am equally clueless on yardage because I could easily make 6 more Grovers with the remaining blue crushed velvet I have. After I finished Grover, which Shay loved (as you can see by his break-dancing Grover in the second photo) I thought--I should make Remy a costume too. He is bigger--which meant more time, but mostly just bigger stitches! As you notice, Remy's is still on the hanger--he won't even think about wearing it! I love the pouch in the back for his spare parts. If you too have a moment where you are hand-stitching costumes late into the night while watching old episodes of Mad Men--Cherish it.

Maryland Family Photographer: Murphy's Law

These are the Murphy's, a beautiful family with four girls, and a mom with an eye for a color palette. Fittingly, this is Murphy's Law: Murphy's law is an adage or epigram that states: "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong."
It is used as either a purely sarcastic musing that things always go wrong, or, less frequently, a reflection of the mathematical law that dictates that, given infinite time, all possible occurrences will eventually take place.

I think this means that if you continue to take photos on land that is more than clearly marked Private Property No Trespassing--the police WILL come. Little more than an hour into shooting, and we said goodbye to what must be the best outdoor studio I could dream of. Which, will soon be demolished. Condos will soon take its place. I am happy to have had the chance to showcase this beautiful space one last time.

Maryland Family Photographer: My Fam

I fell in love with Nate's grandparents' Rhode Island property last time we were there. It is a lifestyle photographer's (my) dream. There are outbuildings and texture with many gardens and rustic details. I feel like you could do a one man play there and have at least five scenes. So, when Nate expressed he'd like Shay to have a family party--we decided we'd do it RI style and include a family photo session. I was a little sad cause for my NJ family and friends I knew it was a stretch, but we are getting together in Nov for a shoot anyway, and really when you have family spread across 3 states, the opportunities for all-family events are the extremes--weddings, funerals, births--but not really birthdays.

Last time we did a photo shoot with the family, we wore white shirts and jeans. It is easy. It is classic. And those are the two things that will always be going on for that option. Everyone has it. Everyone gets it. But, everyone expects it too, and I don't like expected. I like fresh and interesting with simple composition.

In comes new approach to dressing large groups for photographs. Palettes of neutrals and pop colors. Neutrals are colors like: Grey, black, white, cream, navy, brown. Pop colors are vivid and exciting: red, royal blue, pink, lime green, orange, turquois, etc.. When I sent the invitation for Shay's party, I included a sample palette for the guests with swatches. I think this was the best way I could think of to get people on board without adding personal shopper to my title.

I think the results are good! I am happy with the shoot. Not a uniform, but a complimentary look. We could have used more pop. I did bring extra sweaters in case some forgot or were way off, but they were brown--cause I have lots of brown things. Next time, I will try to bring extra accessories in the pop colors.

Yea, blog followers--I am playing catch up! I have so much more--I'll keep them coming this week! Last week, Shay was on a kick with this hat his Great-Gramps wore in our yard a couple Springs ago. I have since taken the string off so he can play with it safely, but he was really hamming it up this day. I can't believe my second baby is riding the rocking horse I bought at the flea market when I was pregnant with Remy.....Cherish every moment. It Flies By.

We took the family up to Rhode Island this weekend and had an hour or so to hang out and have fun. The backdrops are Nate's elementary school, a middle school, and a skatepark at a high school. I noticed today that the only time my boys aren't fighting is when they are working together to get into trouble. Cans, q-tips, flour, in our house we call it thrashing. They love to get into things together, and that is about all. Here, they decided it was time for crafts. They did this in the time it took me to switch a load of laundry to the dryer.

Maryland Baby Photographer: RDA Contest Finalist

I used cloth diapers starting when Shaymus was 3 days old. We started with simple white Chinese Prefolds with Snappi fasteners and a cover. When he was large enough, we switched over to a borrowed stash of Fuzzi Bunz pocket diapers. We used those exclusively through his 7th month. It was an empowering experience. This may seem strong to describe a diapering experience, and if it just pertained to that, it would be. But, the fact is, I want to be a mother of nursed, cloth-diapered babies. And I have never let being a working mother get in the way of what I want out of child rearing. And, lets face it--cloth diapering used to just be called diapering. This is not a new concept. Though I can attest... the diapers are VERY new in design and functionality.

I subscribed to a blog of a local cloth diaper supplier and advocate. The blog/shop is Soft and Cozy Baby and it is owned and managed by Bayla--a mother--a working, nursing, cloth diapering, babywearing mother like me. If you are expecting, or have alittle one, her site is a great resource for learning about cloth diapers and diapering. Bayla announced a photo contest run by the RDA (Real Diaper Association) in the begninning of the month.

The RDA is a cloth dipaering advocacy group. They announced a photo contest in August. The winners will receive prizes and the selected photos will appear in a 2010 RDA Cloth Diaper calendar featuring real cloth diapered babies. I submitted a photo of Shay when he was just a few weeks old. The focus is his feet, but you can see his prefold/cover peeking out of the leg holes of his onesie...and clearly, he has that big puffy cloth diaper butt. To see my submission, you can click on the link below, or visit my website. There were 175 submissions total, and mine is 1 of 12 chosen to be featured in the calendar! That is all I know as of yet.... believe me... you will know if I win the grand, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place prizes! After seeing the submissions, I started to doubt, and wished I had set up a shot specifically for this contest. I doubted the understated appearance of the diaper. I doubted that Shay had clothes on. I doubted pretty much all of the things that made me choose it in the first place. This is a real diaper, on a real baby. Simple. Back to basics. Clean.

Maryland Photographer: L is for...Little Boy

I take a lot of photos. Everyday, I see something that strikes me in a way that tells my heart and my brain to take notice and appreciate it for that extra bit of time it takes me to grab my camera and frame it. And usually, I know it is a great photo. This photo didn't hit me until I saw it large and on my screen. I couldnt take my eyes off of the details. L is for the little boy taking over Spiderman on a cracked sidewalk. L is for the little boy who still wears velcro shoes. L is for the little boy with bug bites up to his knees. L is for the little boy whose weapon is a stray weed from his yard. This photo screams to me my baby is a little boy, and at the same time really captures innocence, where bug bites are pain, heroes are fictional, and weapons dont even mark the skin. A little boy. A cherished little boy. It flies by.

I got a lead for this shoot back in May when I was looking for prom dates to photograph. I really wanted to show high school sweethearts, prom, corsages in a fresh new perspective. The story of the cute couple below: Michelle and Calvin were unable to attend prom this year, since Michelle was ill. So, they made their own prom last week at the Rams Head in Savage! I was happy to be there shooting away at youth, dancing on brick at dusk. Below, you can see a few portraits I took of each of them. Calvin shipped off to join the Marine Corps just 4 days after this shoot. The curls are gone, but he'll have a nice photo of Michelle to keep close! Sometimes people say to me "I don't know how you do it". Usually they are refering to mothering two little boys, keeping a healthy marriage, running a business while holding a full-time job, traveling up and down the east coast for visits, etc. And the truth is...I don't. I mean, I do, but there is always something that is inched to the side of the plate as another takes focus (Pictured above, it is the heaping laundry that is being used as a springboard that I can't seem to get folded). Balance is so difficult that just coming close is rewarding. But it is all of this that gives me the understanding take photos the way I do. I don't disrupt or disturb or pose the roaming....but capture what is that makes it gorgeous just as it is. Holy crap... these clothes are only going to get bigger...

Maryland Photographer...and Artist

I have been trying to remind myself lately that I am an artist. I started a home project last week to create an art gallery that goes down the longest wall in my house...right in the middle. It is the load-bearing wall. Art has been that for me. It has held me standing, and often I forget to celebrate the gift I have. But, when that wall is covered in the art and family I have made, I will feel I have done my creations justice. I thought I would share another shot from Angelica's shoot that I worked on this morning. Yes, I am on a light beam obsession. I added the wings, which is not just cutting out and slapping wings in there since this shot is mostly backlit, and she is covered in the sunglare spectrum. There is art in everyday moments, but sometimes it feels good just to make things up like wings and saturation and tiny light embers at your fingertips. Cherish every moment. It Flies By.

The processional and recessional at the wedding were played by classically trained trumpet player, CJ Camerieri. It was royal. It was smooth. It was alone--accompanied only by the acoustics of the church. It was as special as a woman walking to meet a man and coming away a couple. It gave goosebumps! But, I kinda wish I had asked to get in his face at some point and shoot big puffed cheeks at the end of a horn, so you could better imagine the controlled power that went into it all. Maryland Wedding Photographer: Beloved in Natural Light

I was in the wedding party for my friend Addie's wedding. And since there were already two photographers on duty for hire, and clearly I could not shoot the ceremony... I decided to have a game taking all my shots with no flash. This is my love/style/choice 99% of the time anyway, but I thought it would be fun to see the difference in mood from the professionally shot photos that used fill flash. My eyes won't pop like theirs will, and I have some banding from editing, but all the moments are real and the light is true to the actual moment. The wedding photographers were completely tolerant of my desire to shoot alongside them at times...but I also chose to shoot the bridal party and surroundings a bit more. I think that with all three angles, there will be a pretty full documentation of the wedding day for the beautiful bride and her groom. I like the three shots in color with Addie, then Graham looking at Addie, then the couple walking away. If I didn't know better--it looks like a wedding in itself, witnessed only by the photographer and the rhododendron. I had a corporate function to attend this week where wearing this outfit was actually appropriate! There was a competition for teams to recreate and era in a 6x6 space. My team was disco! The competition was really tough and people put so much effort into the creations. Some of the other categories were Egyptian, Roman, Viking, 50s, etc. My team won! I called Nate on the way home. He asked if I could pick up a 6-pack of beer and sandwiches. This is me walking out of the liquor store dressed like solid gold dancer. Yes, I took this myself. Cherish every moment. It Flies By.

Maryland Newborn Baby Photographer: It's A Girl!

You may remember my post "Braidy Bunch"--well--their baby girl has arrived! When I arrived, she was sleeping peacefully... and clothed. When I left, she was unclothed and ready to eat--but the photos came out well at least. Really, I was in and out in 35 minutes, and tried to cause as little disturbance to the new family as possible, but my shot of the baby in a belly cast wasnt quite as peaceful as I had hoped. I took these this morning. I was happy that the family didn't make much mention of the lack of sun and trusted my judgement to proceed with the shoot as planned. Clouds and haze filter the harsh sun and leave clean white light for us to shoot in. The humidity adds no value though! Ava led her family up and down the path to the lake. She is an explorer though I am pretty sure she is Daddy's Little Girl. I have many more shots to get through, but I wanted to post early so Ava's mom can see she made the right choice by skipping the studio this time. ;) Cherish every moment. It Flies By.

I have so many things to say about this shoot, and very much emotion behind it. I say I want to redefine beauty. I want to do this by showing others what I see when I take a photo. To me, everyone is beautiful, and the more characteristics you have that make you unique, the more beautiful I think you are. So much so, that it pains me to think of how much time is wasted trying to be like everyone else, or trying to be anything other that what we are unless we are aspiring for better.

I promote shooting naturally as often as possible and rarely pose or disguise, and yet I chose to have the back of Amy's wheelchair draped with a soft pink blanket for the shoot. I thought Amy would like the chance to shed her disability for an hour and be seen for the beauty that she is. However, if you have an opinion on this, I am open to receive it, and may consider another option in the future based on input. I can see why leaving her chair exposed would have been of benefit as well. Looking back, I probably should have shot both. Leave a comment if you have thoughts on this.

Amy couldn't have been a better subject. In the last photo, the light bounces off her profile, and she is as radiant on the outside as she is on the inside--basking in it all. Cherish every moment. It Flies By.

This was my second visit to Milena's home for a photo session. Last time I was in the later stages of my pregnancy with Shaymus. I was thankful to be fully comfortable and mobile this time--Caleb has all the active, wondering spirit that an 18 month old should! Nathaniel loves the camera and enjoyed making props from any odd items he could find from hairbrush to shoelace. He was eager to see the photos, and I hope he enjoys seeing them here! I picture this is what Remy dreams of at night. He is walking down the street when he happens upon two Thomas the Tank Engine colored doors. He is curious, like all 2 year old boys. He decides to look more closely. As he opens the door, he is taken to the Island of Sodor to spend the day with Thomas and his friends. After playing, riding, meeting Sir Topham, and enjoying the day, he returns through the door...hesitant to leave the magic behind.

Reality?
Day Out with Thomas event at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, and rowhome doors on the block opposite the museum. It was a great event, and if it isn't raining too badly tomorrow, I recommend it. There were enough acitivities to fill hours of time.

Maryland Family Photographer: I Have No Proof

I know this is many more images than I usually post from a shoot. I need to make an important point, and I think this is a great way to do it. Proofs. Most professional photographers give the customer proofs from which to choose. Then, they charge per image for processing and printing. I don't. All images that I think best reflect the family, the moments, the emotions are retouched, digitally enhanced and cropped. You do not have to compare, toss aside the second favorite to stay within budget, or wonder--"What did they do with that sheet of photos (I did not choose)?" Images that are similar in color and style with variations in mood make excellent groupings on the wall. Here, a tender kiss, a budding acrobat, and a classic smile will show the full character of these brothers when hung beside one another. Below, a boy shows his independence and his desire for support from his parents alike. He shows his brother something new in the world. A beautiful mother glows with love for her baby. Why choose when you can have it all? Cherish every moment. It Flies By.

My friend Lisa called today. She is busy like me. Between jobs, she called me to tell me about a photo contest depicting mothers. I searched through my photos since I have been a mother....and what an eye opener. My babies call me Mama. Here we are for you to see. DaVida must be the happiest pregnant woman I have ever seen. Her little girl is due in 6 days and I can't wait to meet her. She called me a few hours before the shoot. "Do I need to wear makeup? I don't wear makeup. Can I wear what I wore to work?" My answer was "Be yourself and be comfortable." She did, and I don't think there is any question that the result was just amazingly natural beauty. I was obsessed with the texture and personality her braids gave to the photos. I had an on-location family shoot today at 9am. When I arrived, I asked if I could walk around the house to get a feel for the set up to see where the light lay in our surroundings. The friendly response I got was "Sure! Just don't fall off the cliff!" After a bit of shooting, we found the sweet spot of texture and flora with a nice background and tree filtered light on a small slate path--on the safe side of the cliff! Remy has been great with identifying colors lately, with newest additions of brown, black, and white. This week, I wore a black and lavender top to work. When I came home, he called me "purple Mama". I have the honor of being in the bridal party for an upcoming wedding of a dear friend I have had... well, for as long as any friend I have ever had (since I was 10). She had a Bridal Shower in March in New Jersey. It was a labor of love from her mother. The details were perfect, the flowers fragrant, and the food phenomenal. I worked the room like I was working and came up with mostly photo-journalistic shots and hyper detailed pieces. Here are some of our Spring photos. We like to go up the road to CCBC on Rolling Road in Catonsville. The campus clears out for Spring Break, and the Arnold family rolls in to snap a few photos. I love the stone work there. Last year, Remy wasn't even walking! This year, it was too much to juggle to try to get him to sit for a shot. I have wanted to shoot a child in a Barber Shop for a while now. My friend was happy to offer up her son BJ so I could fulfill my vision. Here are a few of the photos from our after work trip to the barber. I love the one of the clippers...since BJ's mom is in the background keeping Shay company while I snapped away. I missed the shot of BJ offering a handshake to the barber after he paid him. It was truly a moment....such a little man...maybe next time. As a photographer in the digital age, I often hear "Can I see?" after each snap and the child reaches up to see himself in the preview pane. I usually oblige the first time and otherwise try to keep the child on task and entertained for the remainder of the shoot. BJ did not ask to see himself. He asked to take a picture. I hung the camera around his neck, and showed him how to autofocus. The photos of the Escalade and my portrait are by BJ, age 4. Cherish every moment. It Flies By.

I took the top photo of Remy (then 9mths) using the auto flash on my Canon Rebel. See the tiny round lights in his eyes.. which are still gorgeous nonetheless? Traditionally, it is considered most appealing for catchlights to rest easy at 10 or 2 in the reflection of an eye. Here, Shay's take the shape of an attic window. Indoor photographs can be a huge challenge... search out the windows and make your subject's eyes inviting. Cherish every moment. It Flies by.

I like this shot where Remy looks as though he is whispering a little big brother advice to his hoodie-clad brother. It reminded me that after our holiday craziness of visiting here and there across several states with two sick kids for Christmas this year...when we came back... I was taking a photo, and Remy said:"Cheeeeeese!" How a child can pick up a behavior in just a short time, I dont know. He doesnt ask to wear argyle sweaters! I have heard no mention of gingerbread houses or Santa's lap even! In no way am I being dramatic: I felt ill. For a second, I thought, all of my hard work to document real moments of my children has gone to the can and been replaced by posing and "Cheeeeeese!!!!!". Lying on my belly in the dirt, hiding behind corners, running, ducking, jumping, the Ninja of candid childhood shots--ALL TO WASTE!!! Then, I chose to ignore it. And luckily, like most pesky behaviors we choose to ignore... it went away. Cherish every moment. It Flies By.

A story of Architectural Antiques Salvage.

Jessie, Shaymus and I took a welcome break this week to venture slightly into the city. Jessie went in search of an interesting door knocker. I went to find a place with clutter that had been sitting longer that in my own home. We were both successful. Here are some of the treasures from our trip... which was free in the end. Sorry Second Chance... according to your name, there is always next time.Jessie's great-grandfather had a planter like this. Each year, he would paint the planter, and say to his visitors: "Hey! Did you see my a**?" For 45 dollars or with Photoshop, you can carry on the tradition.

The weather was absolutely gorgeous today. I can't believe this shot of Remy in the snow was taken just a short time ago. I loved zooming in close on this one. I could see myself with Shaymus in the carrier reflected back in a snowy scene in Remy's eyes. I guess if you have visited my blog, you'd like to know more about me. I am from South Jersey originally, and I love roadside treasures. You can find this cowboy on Rt. 40 at the Cowtown Rodeo and "farmer's market", which I would call more of a flea market based on the things sold there. It has been a great rest area for me to nurse my babies on the way home in latest years, but marked one of the few things to do on a Saturday night in SJ throughout my childhood. I take my camera with me everywhere. I encourage people to keep a point-and-shoot in your glove compartment--because it will serve you more frequently than gloves would...hopefully for fun photos like this, but practically, it is advisable to have in case you are in an accident. Children Photography: Anywhere is Going Nowhere

I have been trying to find a means to propose (read get paid for) my Anywhere Chair photo ideas to William-Sonoma company who owns Pottery Barn and Pottery Barn Kids. This company currently sends pretty much the same catalog with new pages containing the same products in new rooms with new bright paint schemes and new white kids in them...and well, it is working for them. But, I still think my idea is great and could possibly give their brand and energetic charge. So, if anyone has experience in writing proposals to large companies pitching great photo/advertising ideas in exchange for cheddar... I am highly interested in hearing from you. In the meantime, here is my handsome man Remy. The photos were taken Anywhere. If your child has an Anywhere chair and you would like to jump on my currently empty bandwagon, contact me for a photo shoot that is so much fun for them. Remy just loves this adventure we have taken on. And on a positive note, at least I feel lucky to be the kind of person who truly makes ideas. They come from me, and they give a bit of a flutter to my heart when they come. Often people ask, where did you get that idea? But, things that you see other places or mold to be your own from another, is not an idea, it is an adoption or adaptation. Ideas come from within. I am fortunate to be an idea- maker.
